Common Questions: Towing, Snow and the Pass

Can you haul equipment up or down the pass in winter?

Equipment hauling and transport are part of our service. Winter conditions and chain controls can affect timing, so call ahead with the equipment, weight and destination.

What do you need to know before hauling my equipment?

Dispatch will ask what the equipment is, its size and weight, where it is now and where it needs to go. Having those details ready gets you an accurate plan.

What do R-1, R-2 and R-3 chain controls mean?

R-1 means chains or snow-rated tires are required on the drive wheels. R-2 means chains are required on all vehicles except four-wheel-drive vehicles with snow tires on all four wheels. R-3 means chains are required on every vehicle, no exceptions.

What if my equipment trailer gets stuck in the snow?

Winch-out and recovery are part of our service. Tell dispatch what is attached and where you are stopped.

How do I check if the pass is open or under chain control?

Caltrans QuickMap (quickmap.dot.ca.gov) and the road information line at 1-800-427-7623 report closures and chain controls on US-50 over Echo Summit, I-80 over Donner Summit and CA-88 over Carson Pass. Check right before you leave, since conditions can change within an hour.
