Common Questions: Towing, Snow and the Pass
Can you pull a vehicle out of a snowbank or off a snowy forest road?
Winch-out, ditch extraction and 4x4 recovery are part of our service, and they apply to snow-packed shoulders and forest roads as well as mud and water. Tell dispatch the road, the snow depth and how the vehicle is sitting.
My vehicle slid off the road on the way to the pass. What should I do first?
Stay clear of traffic, turn on your hazards and call 530-622-9211. Do not try to winch or pull it with a passing driver, since a bad pull can damage the frame or put you in the road.
Do you recover vehicles stuck near the snow line on Wrights Lake Road, Silver Fork Road or Sly Park Road?
Those roads are inside our area. Winter access can change quickly, so tell dispatch what you know about snow, ice and whether the road is plowed.
How do I check if the pass is open or under chain control?
Caltrans QuickMap (quickmap.dot.ca.gov) and the road information line at 1-800-427-7623 report closures and chain controls on US-50 over Echo Summit, I-80 over Donner Summit and CA-88 over Carson Pass. Check right before you leave, since conditions can change within an hour.
Is it safe to wait in my vehicle in a storm?
Staying with the vehicle is usually the safest choice. Keep your hazard lights on, make sure the tailpipe is clear of snow if you run the engine, crack a window for fresh air, and call us with your location.
